EU in Article 7 ULTIMATUM: Brussels threat to strip Poland’s vote rights if reforms go on
European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said triggering the so-called nuclear option is “part of the discussion”.
He said: “Given the latest developments, we are coming very close to triggering Article 7.
“If implemented in their current form, these laws would have a very significant negative impact on the independence of the judiciary and would increase the systemic threat to the rule of law in Poland.”
The chairman of the largest faction in the European Parliament, Germany’s Manfred Weber, said: “It goes beyond doubt now: PiS government is trying to abolish rule of law in Poland. This has to be stopped.”
Konrad Szymanski, Poland’s deputy foreign minister in charge of European affairs, said: “If other procedures are triggered, we will defend our position, including before the Court of Justice.”
Condemning the Polish reforms, Mr Timmermans said: “These laws considerably increase the systemic threats to the rule of law.
“They would abolish any remaining judicial independence and put the judiciary under full political control of the government.”
