President Trump and Family Wish Senator John McCain Well in Official Statement

President Trump released an official White House statement wishing Senator John McCain luck in his battle with brain cancer.

The official statement reads:

“Senator John McCain has always been a fighter. Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon.”

The statement comes amid a flurry of high level support for the veteran senator after his cancer diagnosis.

The president used his favored online platform to show his support.

A CNN report Wednesday revealed that McCain had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye, which led doctor’s to discover the brain tumor. Because of the nature of the tumor, doctors had to remove some bone above his eyebrow to access it. The bone was replaced afterwards. McCain will continue to undergo treatment.

What doctors found was a primary glioblastoma brain tumor, an aggressive form of brain cancer similar to what led to the death of the son of former vice president Joe Biden and to McCain’s rival in politics, former Senator Edward Kennedy, who died in 2009.

Before McCain’s political career took off, he served in the United States Navy. He was captured as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. He stayed in Vietnam in for five and a half years. During that time he underwent torture and solitary confinement. After retiring from the military in the early 1980s, he was elected to the House of Representatives, and then to the U.S. Senate, where he has served since 1987.
