‘They’re CRAZY!’ British officials vow to challenge EVERY LINE of EU’s £80bn Brexit bill
Exasperated EU officials, meanwhile, want to agree a formula for calculating the cash settlement with Britain but say they have come up against conflicting views within Whitehall about what Brexit represents.
One senior diplomat said there was “chaos” in the British Government, adding: “The likelihood of Brexit by default has increased. If you hear three negotiators in London, you get three different Brexit concepts.”
Yesterday Mr Barnier pointedly took his most senior financial advisor, the French official Stephanie Riso, into talks with his British counterparts in a clear nod that the EU wants to make progress on the divorce bill.
EU and UK officials will lock horns in the Belgian capital all week over other key issues, including citizens’ rights and Northern Ireland, with the Brexit secretary flying back in for further talks on Thursday.
