This 2-Ingredient, DIY Shampoo Solution Promotes Hair Growth

Trying to find the right shampoo is one of those beauty quests that we all have to go on multiple times throughout our lives. Whether we’re hoping to calm frizz, create volume, or cure dandruff, there’s always a particular need we’re trying to fulfill.

What makes it even more difficult? Incorporating all the other things our hair needs, too— cleaning and conditioning, sure, but also promoting growth! And if you’re trying to do all of that, not break your budget, and avoid mysterious artificial ingredients? That quest can start feeling particularly quixotic!

Luckily, that’s why you keep us around! In the tradition of finding ways to use unexpected ingredients to help our hair – coconut oil, peanut butter, etc. – we’ve found a 2-ingredient, DIY, growth-promoting recipe you’re going to love. Bonus? Both ingredients are probably already in your pantry!

What are they? Baking soda and apple cider vinegar! (Plus a little water.)

That’s it! According to Cure Joy, all you need to do is make a mixture that’s 1 part baking soda, 3 parts water, and another that’s 1 part apple cider vinegar, 4 parts water.

Then just apply the baking soda mixture to your roots with wet or dry hair – convenient, right?! – rinse with water, then rinse with the apple cider vinegar mixture. That’s it! After using this method for about a month or so, you’ll notice your hair has a nicer texture and that it’s growing faster and healthier. Any damage from harsher former products or heat tools will be repaired!

And side note— don’t worry if it doesn’t foam! It’s a myth – probably born from over-dramatic shampoo commercials – that foamier equals cleaner or more effective. This baking-soda-and-apple-cider-vinegar mixture might not look picture-perfect while you’re using it, but it WILL leave you with picture-perfect strands.
