He told Express.co.uk: “The EU has no legal standing whatsoever in this matter. Since the Treaty of Utrecht in 1717, Gibraltar is a sovereign part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. 

“The EU has absolutely no jurisdiction over this. No attention or credibility need be given to such arrant nonsense coming from this unelected comissars in an undemocratic institution.” 

He also accused Brussels of “sequestering” Spain’s former sovereign rights. 

Mr Quigley said: “Spain is still part of the European Union, so this is a contradiction in terms, as the EU has effectively sequestered all of Spain’s former sovereign rights anyway, so it would be an issue between the British Government and Brussels.

“This is nothing to do with Spain. So these EU clowns can’t have it both ways.”
